Ashraya: New Farmer Service Centres Launched in Kerala

The Agriculture Department has introduced ‘Ashraya’ farmer service centres, which aim to provide digital services to farmers across the Kerala. They are an extension of the recently launched ‘Kathir’ app (short for ‘Kerala Agriculture Technology Hub and Information Repository’), which consolidates farm-related services into one platform, which will enhance farmers’ access to these digital services.

Objectives of ‘Ashraya’ Centres

The primary objective is to facilitate quick access to essential services. Farmers can register on the Agriculture Information Management System (AIMS) portal. They can also sign up for the procurement of crops like paddy, coconut, and copra. Additionally, the centres will support services under the Sub Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation (SMAM).

Service Fees and Accessibility

Service fees at ‘Ashraya’ centres will mirror those of Akshaya centres, which ensures affordability for farmers seeking assistance. The aim is to establish one centre in each Krishi Bhavan area. The first centre will open this year in a region with many small and marginal farmers.

Management and Expansion Plans

Initially, ‘Ashraya‘ centres will be operated by ‘Krishikootam’ collectives. Other managing entities include KrishiShree, Agro Services Centres, and Karshika Karma Senas. The success of the initiative will determine further expansion. More centres will be established based on demand and effectiveness.

The launch of these centres is expected to benefit local farmers, which will provide crucial support and resources. Improved access to digital services will empower farmers to make informed decisions. Ultimately, this initiative aims to enhance agricultural productivity in the state.
