India Tests K-4 Missile from INS Arighaat
The Indian Navy conducted a successful test of the K-4 ballistic missile, which took place in the Bay of Bengal and involved the new nuclear-powered submarine, INS Arighaat. The missile has a range of 3,500 km, which enhances India’s nuclear deterrence capabilities.
Missile Specifications
The K-4 ballistic missile is designed for submarine launch, which is an important component of India’s defence arsenal. The missile underwent multiple trials by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). These trials ensured it met operational standards before the full-range test.
INS Arighaat Details
INS Arighaat was commissioned into the Indian Navy in August 2024, which features a more powerful missile system than its predecessor, INS Arihant. INS Arighaat can carry K-4 missiles, extending its strike range compared to the K-15 missiles on INS Arihant, which have a range of 750 km.
Strategic Importance
The upgrade of INS Arighaat strengthens India’s nuclear-powered submarine fleet. This enhancement provides India with more strategic options for defence. The submarine fleet currently includes INS Arihant, which was commissioned in 2018. A third submarine is expected to join the fleet next year.
Government Initiatives
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh brought into light the significance of INS Arighaat. He described it as a testament to India’s technological prowess. The submarine’s construction reflects the government’s “Aatmanirbharta” initiative, promoting self-reliance. Indian scientists, industries, and naval personnel collaborated on its development.
The successful test and commissioning of INS Arighaat will boost India’s national security, which enhances the country’s ability to deter potential threats. The advancements in submarine technology signify a leap in India’s defence capabilities.
