59th All India Conference of Directors General/Inspector Generals of Police

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently addressed the 59th All India Conference of Directors General/Inspector Generals of Police in Bhubaneswar, which took place on November 30 and December 1, 2024. The Prime Minister emphasized the need for a modernized and strategic police force.

Emphasis on SMART Policing

Modi urged police to adopt SMART principles – Strategic, Meticulous, Reliable, Transparent, and Flexible. He brought into light the importance of adapting to changing circumstances and challenges in law enforcement.

The Prime Minister stressed using technology to ease officers’ workloads. He pointed out the necessity of addressing digital fraud, cyber crimes, and AI-related threats. He encouraged leveraging Artificial Intelligence to transform challenges into opportunities.

National Police Hackathon

A proposal for a National Police Hackathon was made, which aims to tackle key policing issues. It builds on the success of previous hackathons, encouraging innovation and collaboration among police officers.

Modernisation for Development

Modi called for the police force to modernise in line with India’s aspirations for development. The vision of “Viksit Bharat” requires a more efficient and capable police service.

The Prime Minister outlined various security challenges, which include terrorism, left-wing extremism, cybercrime, economic security, immigration, coastal security, and narco-trafficking. He also brought into light emerging concerns along borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Enhancing Urban Policing

Discussions included improving urban policing strategies. Combating malicious narratives and implementing new criminal laws were also key topics at the conference.

Modi concluded by urging police to honour Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s legacy. He called for a commitment to professionalism and enhanced capabilities within the police force.

Conference Participation

The conference saw participation from the Union Home Minister, National Security Advisor, Union Home Secretary, and over 750 police officers. Attendance was both physical and virtual, showcasing the importance of this event.
