Mission Arun Himveer
The government of Arunachal Pradesh has launched ‘Mission Arun Himveer’, which aims to improve market access for agricultural and horticultural products. It was announced in Itanagar with the signing of an agreement between the Arunachal Pradesh Agriculture Marketing Board (APAMB) and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). Chief Minister Pema Khandu was present at the event.
Initiative Overview
Mission Arun Himveer focuses on supplying locally grown produce to the ITBP, which includes fruits, vegetables, meat, and poultry. The products will be sourced from local farmers, self-help groups (SHGs), farmer-producer organizations (FPOs), and cooperatives. The mission aims to boost the local economy.
Previous Agreements
This initiative follows a similar agreement made in 2022 with the Indian Army. So far, around 400 tonnes of fruits and vegetables worth Rs 72 lakh have been supplied to the Army. The new agreement with ITBP seeks to expand these efforts.
The mission aims to create markets for produce from remote villages, which is expected to enhance farmers’ income and provide employment opportunities. The initiative will also strengthen ties between local communities and ITBP forces.
Focus on Women and Rural Economy
The initiative marks the importance of the rural economy. Over one lakh women are currently involved in SHGs across the state. Their participation is crucial for the success of the mission.
Under the mission, ITBP can purchase products directly from farmers. Payments will be processed through a Rs 4 crore revolving fund. The goal is to conduct over Rs 10 crore in business annually, ensuring that funds go directly to farmers.
Key Participants
The MoU was signed by APAMB CEO Okit Palling and ITBP IG Akun Sabharwal. The event included various government officials, such as Deputy CM Chowna Mein and Agriculture Minister Gabriel D Wangsu. Farmers and members of SHGs, FPOs, and cooperatives participated virtually.
