New Pterosaur Species Discovered in Japan

Pterosaurs were remarkable flying reptiles that roamed the Earth from 210 to 65 million years ago. They predated birds and bats as the first flying vertebrates. Recent discoveries have shed light on these ancient creatures, particularly in Japan.

Characteristics of Pterosaurs

Pterosaurs varied greatly in size and appearance. Some, like the azhdarchids, were enormous. They could reach wingspans exceeding 9 meters (30 feet). Their bones were lightweight and fragile, which complicates fossil preservation. Many pterosaur fossils are incomplete or fragmented.

Fossil Discovery in Japan

Japan has a limited fossil record for pterosaurs. The first important find was in the Yezo Group in Hokkaido. This discovery included a femur, metatarsal, and vertebrae. Such finds are rare and crucial for understanding pterosaur diversity.

Nipponopterus mifunensis

A new species, Nipponopterus mifunensis, has been identified, which belongs to the Azhdarchidae family, which includes some of the largest pterosaurs. This species lived approximately 90 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. It is the first named pterosaur species from Japan.

Discovery Location

The fossil of Nipponopterus mifunensis was found in the Mifune Group, located in Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu Island. It was embedded in a middle layer of sandstone, sandwiched between two volcanic rock layers. This unique geological context aids in dating and understanding the fossil.

The discovery of Nipponopterus mifunensis enhances knowledge of pterosaur evolution. It shares characteristics with other large pterosaurs, including those found in Mongolia. This find puts stress on the importance of ongoing paleontological research in Japan.

Important Facts for Exams:

  1. Azhdarchidae: This family includes some of the largest pterosaurs. They are characterised by long necks and elongated vertebrae. Their fossils provide vital information about the evolution of flying reptiles.
  2. Mifune Group: The Mifune Group is located in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. It contains important fossil layers. This geological formation aids in understanding the Late Cretaceous period’s biodiversity.
  3. Nipponopterus mifunensis: This newly identified species lived around 90 million years ago. It is the first named pterosaur from Japan. Its discovery marks Japan’s paleontological significance and diversity.
  4. Yezo Group: The Yezo Group is located in Hokkaido, Japan. It holds the first important pterosaur fossil discovery in the country. This find includes critical skeletal parts, enhancing fossil records.
