Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City Project

Bhutan is developing the Gelephu Mindfulness City, which is the largest co-operative initiative in the country. Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay expressed gratitude to India for its support. The city spans 2,500 square kilometres and aims to be Zero Carbon, which focuses on mindfulness, sustainability, and harmony.

Global Conference Context

The project was discussed at the Global Conference of The International Co-operative Alliance in New Delhi. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the conference. The event attracted around 3,000 delegates, including 1,000 representatives from 100 countries. Modi emphasised the need for global financial institutions to support co-operatives. He also linked co-operatives to the circular economy.

Government Initiatives

Union Home Minister Amit Shah brought into light government efforts to enhance prosperity through co-operation. He mentioned new initiatives benefiting millions of women, farmers, and villages. Over two lakh new Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) will be established in the next three years. This ensures every village has access to a co-operative society.

Gelephu City Vision

Tobgay described Gelephu Mindfulness City as a centre for knowledge, technology, and finance. He affirmed that every citizen of Bhutan will be a shareholder and stakeholder. This demonstrates Bhutan’s commitment to a co-operative spirit.

Bhutan’s Diplomatic Engagements

King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck has visited India twice since the project announcement. His visits aim to seek investment and collaborations in infrastructure. Discussions include hospitality, education, IT, and wellness sectors. Tobgay’s recent visit marks his fourth trip to India this year. He has met with the Adani Group regarding renewable energy and infrastructure projects.

Despite challenges faced by Adani projects in neighbouring countries, Bhutan has not commented on these issues. The focus remains on the development of Gelephu Mindfulness City and strengthening ties with India.
