Jobs at Your Doorstep Report

The Union Education Minister and Labour Minister recently launched a World Bank report, which is titled “Jobs at Your Doorstep – A Jobs Diagnostics for Young People,” which focuses on job opportunities and skill development in six states of India – Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Rajasthan.

Report Overview

The report offers vital information about aligning education with job opportunities, which marks sectors with high employment potential for young school leavers. It identifies gaps between skills taught in schools and local industry needs.

Study Context

Conducted under the World Bank’s STARS program, the study supports educational reforms. STARS aims to improve teaching and learning outcomes. It also shares successful practices nationally to enhance education and job readiness.

Skill-Based Education

The report stresses the need for integrating skill-based education, which recommends this integration from Classes 9 to 12. A bottom-up approach is used to analyse district-level job markets. This connects students with local employment opportunities.

Government Vision

The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, which aims to make India a global hub for skilled workers. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 supports this vision by mainstreaming skill education.

The government plans to transform India into a high-income economy by 2047. It aims to strengthen vocational education and market-driven skill development. Reforms under NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework 2023 are key to this strategy.

Accessibility Targets

The government aims to make skilling accessible to 50% of students by 2025. All secondary schools are expected to offer skill education by 2030. This will prepare students for a competitive job market.

Senior officials attended the report launch. Notable attendees included Sanjay Kumar and Atul Kumar Tiwari. The World Bank’s India Country Director, Auguste Tano Kouame, was also present.
