What is Methanol?
Methanol is a toxic, colorless alcohol, that is commonly used in industrial products. These include antifreeze, de-icers, and paint thinners. Symptoms of Methanol Poisoning
Symptoms may not appear immediately after ingestion and can develop within 12 to 24 hours. Initial signs include nausea and vomiting. Severe stomach pain and difficulty breathing may follow. Hyperventilation can also occur. If untreated, methanol poisoning can lead to blindness, coma, or death.
Treatment and Diagnosis
Early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment. Medical help should be sought immediately if poisoning is suspected. Treatment is most effective within 10 to 30 hours of ingestion. Quick intervention can reduce the severity of symptoms.
Sources of Methanol in Alcohol
Methanol can enter alcoholic beverages accidentally or deliberately. Cheap homemade alcohol is often contaminated. Sometimes, methanol is added to boost alcohol content. This practice is more common in areas where legitimate alcohol is expensive.
Methanol poisoning incidents are not isolated to Laos. Other Asian countries have reported similar tragedies. In Thailand, six deaths occurred from methanol-laced alcohol. India saw 63 fatalities from illegally produced drinks. Tourist hotspots in Malaysia and Indonesia have also experienced such incidents.

Alcohol consumption is rising in Asia. Countries like Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam have seen important increases. Between 2010 and 2017, drinking rates rose by 40% to 90%. This trend raises concerns about the safety of alcohol consumed in these regions.
