Tylototriton koliaensis: Discovery of New Crocodile Newt Species
A new species of crocodile newt has been discovered in Vietnam and took place on a mountainous farm, located in a slow-moving stream. Researchers have named it Tylototriton koliaensis, or the Cao Bang crocodile newt. The discovery has been published in the journal ZooKeys.
Characteristics of the New Species
The Cao Bang crocodile newt is medium-sized, measuring about 5 inches long and has a stout body and rough, knobby skin. The newt’s colouration is entirely black with bright orange marks on its fingertips and toes. Its stomach is dark gray, and there is an orange stripe running down the centre of its tail.
Habitat and Distribution
These newts inhabit mountain forests at elevations of 3,300 feet or higher. The climate in their habitat alternates between a colder dry season and a warmer rainy season.
Cao Bang crocodile newts breed in slow-moving streams or temporary pools during the rainy summer. They prefer to hide under rocks and in cavities during the winter months.
Research Significance
This discovery is important for biodiversity. Researchers noted that there are currently 38 species of crocodile newts across Asia. Six specimens of the Cao Bang crocodile newt have been collected for further analysis.
DNA Analysis
DNA analysis was crucial in confirming the new species. This method helps researchers understand genetic diversity and evolutionary relationships among amphibians.
Future Research Directions
Further studies will focus on the ecological role of the Cao Bang crocodile newt. Researchers aim to explore its behaviour, diet, and interactions with other species in its habitat.
