Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata
Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata was a pioneer Indian philanthropist and entrepreneur, who founded the India’s biggest conglomerate company Tata Group, was born on March 3, 1839, Navsari, Gujarat, India. His ambitious endeavours helped catapult India into the league of industrialized countries.
His contribution toward India
- In 1868 Jamsetji founded a trading company that later evolved into the Tata Group.
- In 1872 founded textile mills at Nagpur, Bombay, and Coorla which introduced finer grade of fiber.
- His enterprises were noted for efficiency, and for improved labour-protection policies.
- His efforts for the Bombay-area hydroelectric power plants later became the Tata Power Company in 1906.
- His efforts led the foundation of Asia’s first and world’s fifth largest steel company i.e. Tata Steel in 1907, which was formerly known as Tata Iron and Steel Company Limited (TISCO).
- His contribution has led Tata group to prove its mettle not only in steel, textiles, and hydroelectric power but also chemicals, trucks, agricultural equipment, cement and locomotives sectors.
Other commercial venture
- It included the first luxury hotel in India, the Taj Mahal Palace.
- Jamsetji established the J.N. Tata Endowment in 1892 that encouraged Indian students to pursue higher education.
- In 1898 he donated land for constructing IIS in Bangalore which was established in 191, thus became the private founder of technical education and scientific research in India.
Government of India has released a commemorative coin on 6th January, 2015, to mark the 175th birth anniversary of the pioneer of India’s industrialisation and the Founder of the Tata group, Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata. The denominations of the coins are Rupees 100 and Rs 5.
