New Director General Appointed for International Solar Alliance

The seventh session of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly took place in New Delhi on November 5, 2024. Mr Ashish Khanna from India was selected as the new Director General. He succeeds Dr Ajay Mathur, who has led the Alliance since 2021. The ISA focuses on promoting solar energy globally, addressing common challenges faced by member countries.

Role of the Director General

The Director General of ISA plays a vital role in advancing the organisation’s mandate. This includes supporting member countries in the deployment of solar energy. The role involves engaging in coordinated actions and addressing challenges collectively. Mr Khanna’s leadership is expected to steer the Alliance towards new opportunities and achievements.

Selection Process

Three candidates were in the running for the Director General position. Each candidate presented their vision for a solar energy-dominant world to ISA member representatives. Mr Khanna emphasised the need to shift focus from “what” to “how.” He brought into light the importance of collaboration and learning from each other’s experiences.

Advocacy and Knowledge Management

ISA focuses on advocacy, analytics, and capacity building. It has published flagship reports like “Easing of Doing Solar” and “World Solar Reports.” The latest report explores solar energy’s role in advancing economic and social equity. ISA also drives knowledge sharing through data portals and innovation centres.

Innovative Financial Tools

The Global Solar Facility, launched at COP27, aims to unlock $50 million in commercial capital for underserved regions. The SolarX Startup Challenge supports scalable solar solutions from Africa and Asia-Pacific, nurturing a project pipeline for future growth.

International Collaboration

ISA plays a crucial role in global collaboration on solar energy. It hosts events at international conferences, including the Solar Hub at COP27. The first International Solar Festival was launched in September 2024, enhancing ISA’s advocacy efforts.

About the International Solar Alliance

The ISA is an intergovernmental organisation with 120 member countries. Its mission is to unlock $1 trillion in solar investments by 2030 while reducing technology costs. ISA promotes solar energy across sectors like agriculture, health, and transport. It helps countries develop solar-friendly policies and mobilise investments.

Partnerships and Future Goals

ISA collaborates with multilateral development banks, private and public sector organisations, and civil society. It aims to deploy cost-effective solar solutions, particularly in least developed countries and small island developing states. Through this work, ISA seeks to transform lives and promote sustainable growth worldwide.
