A new orchid species, Coelogyne tripurensis, was discovered in Jampui Hills, Tripura. It comes from moist broadleaf forests in the Indo-Myanmar Biodiversity Hotspot. The genus Coelogyne has around 600 species, native to the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and Pacific Islands. These orchids are mostly epiphytic, valued for their ornamental appeal and easy growth. The new species belongs to the Fuliginosae section, known for showy flowers and a unique labellum. High phenotypic plasticity makes species in this group hard to classify.

Russian “Izdeliye 305” or Light Multipurpose Guided Rocket (LMUR) has shown strong resistance to jamming in Ukraine. It is a helicopter-launched air-to-surface missile targeting armored vehicles, structures, and vessels. The missile is 1.94 meters long, 200mm in diameter, and weighs 105 kg. Its aerodynamic design and foldable wings enhance maneuverability. It uses inertial navigation, active radar, and an infrared sensor for precise targeting in various weather conditions. It typically carries a high-explosive warhead.

New Zealand won their first Women’s T20 World Cup by defeating South Africa by 32 runs. This victory marked a historic day for New Zealand cricket, as the men’s team also achieved their first Test win in India in 36 years. The 9th ICC Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup was originally scheduled for Bangladesh but was moved to the UAE due to political instability. Bangladesh and the UAE shared hosting rights, with matches held in Dubai and Sharjah from October 3 to 20, 2024.

Copper plate inscriptions from the 16th century were found at Sri Singeeswarar temple in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and located in Mappedu Village. It was originally built by Aditya Karikalan II in 976 AD, father of Chola emperor Rajaraja Cholan. Krishnadevaraya’s viceroy, Dalavai Ariyanadha Mudaliar, added the Rajagopuram, compound wall, and 16-pillar Mandap in 1501. The temple features Dravidian architecture with a 5-tier Rajagopuram. The main deity, Singeeswarar, is worshipped in the form of a large Shiva Lingam.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita represented India at the inauguration of Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka on October 19-20, 2024. India and Indonesia are celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2024. Prabowo Subianto, the 8th President of Indonesia, succeeded Joko Widodo after winning the presidential election on February 14, 2024. The Indonesian presidency term lasts five years, with a maximum of two terms. Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the new Vice President, is the son of Joko Widodo.
