Exercise Naseem-Al-Bahr
The Indian Navy conducted an important bilateral naval exercise named Naseem-Al-Bahr with the Royal Navy of Oman. The exercise took place off the coast of Goa from 13 to 18 October. INS Trikand and a Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft represented India in this collaboration.
Exercise Overview
The exercise comprised two main phases: the harbour phase and the sea phase. The harbour phase ran from 13 to 15 October, while the sea phase took place from 16 to 18 October. This structure allowed for a well-rounded approach to naval training.
Harbour Phase Activities
During the harbour phase, personnel from both navies engaged in professional exchanges. These included Subject Matter Expert Exchanges and planning conferences. Such interactions are vital for sharing knowledge and best practices. Additionally, sports fixtures and social engagements were organised. These activities fostered camaraderie between the two navies, building relationships beyond formal training.
Sea Phase Operations
The sea phase featured various operational activities. Ships conducted gun firings at inflatable surface targets. Close-range anti-aircraft firings were also performed, enhancing combat readiness. Both navies executed manoeuvres and Replenishment at Sea Approaches (RASAPS). These operations are crucial for maintaining supply lines during extended missions.
Helicopter Operations
INS Trikand operated its integral helicopter for advanced training. The helicopter performed cross-deck landings on RNOV Al Seeb. This exercise demonstrated the ability to operate seamlessly between different naval vessels. Vertical Replenishment (VERTREP) was another key activity. This process involves transferring supplies between ships while at sea, denoting logistical capabilities.
Over-the-Horizon Targeting
The Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft played a critical role by providing Over-the-Horizon Targeting (OTHT) data. This capability allows ships to engage targets beyond their visual range, enhancing operational effectiveness.
Interoperability Enhancement
To further improve interoperability Navy Sea Riders joined RNOV Al Seeb for a day. This hands-on experience allowed personnel to learn from each other’s operational methods and tactics.
Outcomes of the Exercise
The Naseem-Al-Bahr exercise was deemed a resounding success. It achieved its objectives of enhancing interoperability between the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy of Oman. The exercise improved mutual understanding and strengthened the cohesion between the two forces. Such collaborations are essential for maintaining security in the Indian Ocean Region.
Strategic Importance
This exercise reaffirms India’s commitment to constructive collaboration with like-minded nations. Strengthening ties with Oman is part of a broader strategy to enhance regional security and stability. These exercises ensure that both navies are prepared for future challenges. They also contribute to a collective security framework in the Indian Ocean Region.
