PM Modi Launches Development Projects Worth Rs 6,100 Crore at Varanasi

On October 20, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched development initiatives in Varanasi, amounting to over ₹6,100 crore. This visit included the inauguration of key projects such as airport upgrades and the RJ Sankara Eye Hospital. The initiatives aim to enhance infrastructure and promote cultural preservation in the region.

Key Development Projects

The development efforts in Varanasi focus on several major projects:

  1. Airport Upgrades: The Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport is set for major expansions. Investments of approximately ₹2,870 crore will fund a new terminal and upgraded runway. Additional projects are planned for Agra, Darbhanga, and Bagdogra, with respective investments of ₹570 crore, ₹910 crore, and ₹1,550 crore. New terminals in Rewa, Ambikapur, and Saharanpur will increase annual passenger capacity to over 2.3 crore.
  2. Healthcare Initiatives: The RJ Sankara Eye Hospital was inaugurated to provide comprehensive eye care services. This facility aims to improve healthcare access for marginalised communities.
  3. Sports Complex Redevelopment: Phases 2 and 3 of the Varanasi Sports Complex are part of the Khelo India scheme. The redevelopment includes a National Centre of Excellence and player accommodations, with an investment exceeding ₹210 crore.
  4. Tourism Enhancements: Projects are underway to improve infrastructure in Buddhist heritage areas, particularly in Sarnath. Enhancements include pedestrian-friendly streets, modern sewer systems, and a zone for local handicraft vendors.

Infrastructure Development

During his address, Modi brought into light the NDA government’s commitment to infrastructure development over the past decade. He noted that Uttar Pradesh, once struggling with roadways, is now known for its high-tech infrastructure. New international airports are being constructed, showcasing the state’s growth.

Employment Opportunities

The development projects are expected to create numerous job opportunities for the youth in Varanasi. Modi emphasised the government’s swift action, stating that in less than 125 days, projects worth ₹15 lakh crore have been initiated across India.

Cultural Significance

The design of the airport projects draws inspiration from the cultural heritage of the region. Modi’s initiatives also include beautification projects for local parks and tourism initiatives at temples, such as the Banasur Temple and Gurudham Temple.

Future Aspirations

Modi expressed optimism about Varanasi’s future as a sporting hub. He mentioned preparations for hosting prestigious events like the Olympics, aimed at transforming the city into a sports powerhouse.

Community Engagement

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the people of Varanasi, his Lok Sabha constituency. He acknowledged their support during his tenure and reiterated his commitment to serving them with increased speed and efficiency. These initiatives collectively mark an important step towards enhancing the infrastructure, healthcare, sports facilities, and tourism in Varanasi, contributing to the overall development of the region.
