A 75-year-old man from Kerala was diagnosed with murine typhus after traveling to Vietnam and Cambodia. Murine typhus is caused by the flea-borne bacteria Rickettsia typhi. It is transmitted to humans through bites from infected fleas, often found on rodents like rats and mice. Fleas can spread the disease for life once infected, and transmission can also occur through contact with infected flea feces. Murine typhus does not spread from person to person and is commonly reported in coastal tropical and subtropical regions. In India, cases have been noted in Northeast states, Madhya Pradesh, and Kashmir.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju announced a “Constitution Glorification Campaign” for the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution on November 26. The campaign will take place in every village across the country. Its goal is to raise awareness about the Constitution, its significance, and the Assembly debates. The initiative aims to highlight how the government has strengthened the Constitution. The campaign will be managed by the Union Ministry of Culture.

A parliamentary delegation attended the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva. The assembly focused on harnessing science, technology, and innovation for a peaceful and sustainable future. The delegation participated in meetings of the IPU’s governing council, the highest decision-making body. They met counterparts from other parliaments during the assembly. The delegation also interacted with the Indian diaspora in Geneva. The IPU included 180 member parliaments and 15 associate members from both large and small countries.

The Delhi High Court recently issued directions to improve access to “orphan drugs” for treating rare diseases. A rare disease is a health condition that affects a small number of people compared to more common diseases. There are between 7,000 and 8,000 classified rare diseases. Less than 5% of these rare diseases have available therapies. A disease is classified as rare if its prevalence is less than one case per 1,000 people.

The Telangana government has started a comprehensive household caste survey to ensure fair resource distribution among all communities. This makes Telangana the third state to conduct a caste-based headcount, following Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. The survey aims to plan and implement various opportunities for the socio-economic and educational improvement of OBCs, SCs, STs, and other weaker sections. It focuses on enhancing employment and political opportunities for these communities in the state.
