Delhi Airport Achieve ‘Net Zero Carbon Emission Airport’ status

Delhi Airport made history by becoming the first airport in India to achieve ‘Net Zero Carbon Emission Airport’ status under the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme by Airport Council International (ACI). This significant milestone was proudly announced by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL).

A Major Milestone

Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) earned Level 5 certification, which reflects its strong commitment to environmental sustainability and its success in significantly reducing carbon emissions. Remarkably, this goal was achieved six years ahead of the 2030 target.

Key Strategies for Success

To reach net zero emissions, DIAL implemented several key strategies:

Switching to Renewable Energy: The airport transitioned to using clean and sustainable energy sources.

Promoting Electric Vehicles: The airport encouraged the use of electric vehicles for its operations to reduce emissions.

Upgrading Infrastructure: Improvements were made to the airport’s facilities to support environmentally friendly practices.

Past Achievements

2016: IGIA became carbon neutral, meaning it balanced the amount of carbon it emitted with the amount it removed from the atmosphere.

2020: The airport reached Level 4+ accreditation, further proving its dedication to sustainability.

Future Goals

DIAL’s CEO, highlighted the airport’s ongoing efforts to explore the use of sustainable aviation fuel and address Scope 3 emissions, which include indirect emissions from sources like passenger travel and waste management. These initiatives demonstrate the airport’s forward-thinking approach to climate responsibility and innovation. By achieving Level 5 certification, Delhi Airport has set a new standard for sustainable airport operations in India and serves as a model for reducing carbon emissions globally.
