Croatia Reintroduces Compulsory Military Service

Croatia announced plans to reintroduce two months of compulsory military service starting January 1, 2025. This decision comes in response to rising tensions in Europe, fueled by Russia’s actions in Ukraine and increasing military activities in the Balkans, a region with a history of conflict.

Background on Conscription in Croatia

Croatia had suspended mandatory military service in 2008, shifting to a volunteer-based military. However, due to the current geopolitical climate, the Croatian government decided to bring back conscription to strengthen national defense.

Government Justifications

Croatian Defence Minister Ivan Anusic explained that the government is focused on boosting its military capabilities. This includes increased funding for soldiers and continued modernization of the Armed Forces, in line with NATO goals.

Regional Implications

Croatia’s move reflects a wider trend in Europe, where countries like Latvia have also reinstated mandatory military service due to security concerns. Serbia, a key rival of Croatia, is considering similar measures, signaling a potential arms race in the region. The reintroduction of compulsory military service in Croatia is a strategic move to enhance national security amid growing instability in Europe, ensuring the country is prepared for future challenges.

About Compulsory Military Service

Conscription, or mandatory military service, is required in over 60 countries. Examples include Switzerland, where men undergo military training with an option for civil service, and Israel, where both men and women are required to serve starting at age 18. Countries like South Korea maintain conscription due to regional threats, while others like Sweden have reinstated it in response to global security changes.

About NATO

NATO, founded in 1949, originally included 12 member countries and was created to counter Soviet influence. Its core principle, “Collective Defense,” means an attack on one member is considered an attack on all, a principle invoked only once after 9/11. NATO, headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, has expanded to 31 members as of 2023 and conducts joint military exercises to strengthen cooperation and defense capabilities.
