Joe Biden withdraws from US Presidential Elections

On July 21, 2023, US President Joe Biden revealed that he was dropping out of the race for president. This came after a lot of talk and pressure from well-known Democrats. Concerns about Biden’s age and ability were raised by his recent debate performance against Republican Donald Trump. This made party members less confident in his campaign.

Biden’s Performance Concerns

Biden tried to calm people’s worries about his age during the debate, but he made them worse instead. Concerns about his ability to stay in the race were raised by instances of him messing up his speech.

Succession Issues for the Democratic Party

Now that Biden has quit, the Democratic Party has the very important job of finding a good candidate. Several possible options have come forward, and each has their own set of skills and problems to solve.

Potential Successors

  1. Kamala Harris: Harris, who is 59 years old and is currently Vice President, is Biden’s most clear choice for successor. Her low approval numbers, on the other hand, make it hard for her to run against Trump.
  2. Gretchen Whitmer: The 52-year-old governor of Michigan is thought to be in the running. She has worked as a politician in both the House and Senate of Michigan. Whitmer is known for having liberal views on issues like abortion, gun control, and education.
  3. Gavin Newsom: Gavin Newsom is the 56-year-old governor of California. He is known for having a long political history, having been deputy governor and mayor of San Francisco. Even though there were rumors of a “shadow campaign,” he has officially backed Biden.
  4. J.B. Pritzker: At 59 years old, the governor of Illinois is one of the richest possible candidates. He has made important changes to the law, such as making it easier for people in Illinois to get abortions.
  5. Josh Shapiro: Shapiro, who will be governor of Pennsylvania in 2022, has higher approval rates and support from both parties. He has been a politician before, spending several terms in the state House and as a commissioner for Montgomery County.
  6. Dean Phillips: Minnesota Congressman Phillips started a primary challenge but dropped out because he didn’t have enough backing. His chances of being in first place if Biden steps down are not good.
