Philippines, Japan Sign Key Military Cooperation Deal

Japan and the Philippines have signed a major security deal that will strengthen their military cooperation at a time when tensions are rising in the Indo-Pacific region. This new deal makes it easy for each country’s military to enter the other’s territory, which strengthens their strategic partnership.

About the Agreement

Gilberto Teodoro, the Philippine Defense Minister, and Yoko Kamikawa, the Japanese Foreign Minister, signed the deal in Manila in front of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. As Japan’s first security pact of this kind in Asia, it’s a big deal. The implementation of this security deal is still waiting for approval from the lawmakers of both countries. Once that happens, it will be fully in place.

Background of Regional Tensions

In 2016, an international court said that China’s broad rights in the South China Sea were not legally valid. China flatly rejected this decision. Japan is having its own strategic problems with China over East China Sea land claims. Japan announced a big increase in its military power in December 2023, which was a big change from its pacifist policies after World War II. This was mostly because Japan was worried that China’s actions were threatening the security of the area.
