3rd UN Conference on Afghanistan at Doha

The current government of Afghanistan, the Taliban, took part in the UN Conference on Afghanistan for the first time. It took place in Doha, Qatar, on June 30 and July 1, 2024. This gathering is the third of its kind to try to open up communication between the rest of the world and Afghanistan. Notably, the session ended without making any big progress on the agenda that had been suggested.

Participants in the Conference

The meeting was organized by the UN and had special representatives from 25 countries and foreign groups, such as the European Union (EU), the Organization of Islamic Countries (IOC), and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Joint Secretary J. P. Singh spoke for India. The Taliban were represented by Zabihullah Mujahid, who is the top spokesman for the Taliban government.

Taliban’s Engagement with the UN Conference

The Taliban’s role in the UN conferences on Afghanistan has changed over time. At first, they weren’t called to the first conference, which took place in May 2023. They also decided not to go to the second conference, which took place in February 2024, because they didn’t agree on the rules for participation. The Taliban went to the third meeting for the first time. They worked with the rest of the world, but Afghan Civil Society was not allowed to be a part of the dialogue.

Key Issues Discussed at the Doha Conference

At the heart of the talks were attempts to build peace in Afghanistan and stop the Taliban from imposing strict Islamic rules after 2021, especially on women’s rights and education. The plan was meant to get the Taliban to talk about international rules and humanitarian problems.

Issue of Women’s Rights in Afghanistan

The Taliban have seriously limited women’s rights and freedoms since they took power in 2021 by enforcing strict Islamic rules. As a result, girls were not allowed to go to school past the primary level, women were not allowed to work, and strict dress rules were enforced. These practices have been criticized and worried about around the world.

International Recognition of the Taliban Regimes

The world’s attitude toward the Taliban is still mostly unrecognizable. China has opened its mission in Kabul again, but the Taliban are still not officially recognized as the government. The Taliban are seen as a radical government that could be a security risk because they are said to be linked to other terrorist groups.
