India Becomes the First Country to Prepare Full List of Fauna

India recently launched the “Fauna of India Checklist Portal,” which is a major step toward protecting wildlife. This complete collection lists 1,04,561 species, making India the first country in the world to record all of its wildlife. The launch took place in Kolkata on the 109th Foundation Day of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI). Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav led the event.

Significance of the Fauna Checklist

The ‘Fauna of India Checklist Portal’ has 121 checklists for 36 phyla and gives detailed information on known taxa, such as endemic, endangered, and scheduled species. This plan is very important for many reasons:

  • Conservation and Protection:It sets up a basic way to track changes in biodiversity and finds species that need immediate conservation action.
  • Scientific Research: The checklist is useful for scientific research because it gives a thorough list of the animals that live in an area. This helps scientists learn more about the variety of life in an area and manage natural resources in a way that doesn’t harm them.
  • Policy and Planning: The detailed information helps make smart rules and programs to safeguard wildlife, keep habitats safe, and control the environment as a whole.

Global Leadership and Conservation Initiatives

India’s success in making this checklist shows that it is a star in documenting biodiversity and sets a standard for other countries to follow. The Minister talked about some programs that show India’s dedication to protecting the earth. Some of these are the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” project and the International Big Cat Alliance. The recent successful cheetah relocations show that these are good ways to protect wildlife.

Impact and Future Prospects

The checklist will be very helpful for taxonomists, researchers, academics, policymakers, and people in charge of protection efforts. It shows how serious India is about protecting biodiversity and strengthens its role as a global environmental steward. This important work lays the groundwork for continued leadership in protecting the environment around the world.
