Telangana Marks Decade Since Formation from Andhra Pradesh

Telangana Formation Day on June 2, which marks ten years since India’s newest state was formed from Andhra Pradesh. The Congress-led UPA government made it easier for the state to form by passing the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. The 2023 celebrations were led by Telangana’s Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, who made the debut of a new state song by Oscar-winning artist M M Keeravani a big deal.

Princely State of Hyderabad and Independence Challenges

Before India got its independence, Telangana was a part of the royal state of Hyderabad, which was ruled by the Nizam. After 1947, the Nizam refused to join the Indian Union. This caused problems between different groups and problems in running the government, which were made worse by the Razakars’ army. In 1948, “Operation Polo” was launched by the Indian government to bring Hyderabad into India, but at first, it stayed a separate state.

Linguistic Reorganisation and Andhra Pradesh Creation

Demand for language states led to the creation of Andhra State in 1953, which grew out of Madras State. Discussions that followed and the 1956 suggestion of the States Reorganization Committee led to the merger of Telangana and Andhra State, creating Andhra Pradesh with Hyderabad as its capital. Opponents of this merger said that it ignored Telangana’s unique character.

The Struggle for a Separate Telangana State

In the late 1960s, persistent differences and what people saw as unfair treatment sparked the call for Telangana to become a state again. The movement went up and down, but when K. Chandrasekar Rao started the Telangana Rashtra Samithi in 2001, it took off. The central government agreed to make Telangana state in 2009 because of changes in politics and public pressure, especially after the death of Andhra Pradesh CM Y S Rajasekhara Reddy in 2009. In 2014, a formal establishment was made, and plans were made for Hyderabad to be a joint city for ten years.
