EU allocates $1 billion aid to Lebanon
The European Union, led by EU chief Ursula von der Leyen, has pledged $1 billion in aid to Lebanon. Announced during her visit to Lebanon on May 2, 2024, this commitment aims to bolster the country’s socio-economic stability, grappling with a profound economic crisis since late 2019. The funds, available until 2027, are designated to enhance basic services such as education and health, in addition to fostering economic momentum through necessary reforms.
This financial support comes in response to Lebanon’s dual challenges of hosting a significant number of refugees and managing increased irregular migration.
Lebanon is currently home to around two million Syrian refugees, the highest per capita globally, with almost 785,000 registered with the United Nations amidst ongoing regional conflicts. The EU’s allocation also includes tackling illegal migration issues and enhancing border security, amidst concerns over Lebanon’s capacity to monitor its territorial waters, exacerbated by the Israel-Hamas conflict impacting regional stability.
Previously, the EU had injected 2.6 billion euros to aid Lebanon in accommodating displaced persons, underscoring ongoing European involvement in the regional refugee crisis. Von der Leyen emphasized the need for Lebanon’s cooperation in combating migrant smuggling and maintaining legal migration pathways to Europe.
Additionally, the visit saw the participation of Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, highlighting regional concerns over migrant boat departures from Lebanon to nearby EU territories like Cyprus. This development underscores a coordinated effort to manage the migration crisis while supporting Lebanon through its severe socio-economic challenges.
