Centre to Issue Heatwave Advisory to States for Worker Welfare

The Centre will issue an advisory to all states and union territories to ensure workers’ welfare during expected heatwave days this summer. The advisory will include measures such as rescheduling work hours, providing regular health checkups, cool places for rest, and adequate water.

The Labour Ministry has also directed autonomous bodies to train workers on protecting themselves from heat waves. India has over 380 million unorganised workers who are often exposed to harsh weather conditions despite existing labour laws. In 2023, nearly 250 people died due to intense heat waves, leading to a loss of labour hours in summer months.

A report by Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change estimated a loss of 191 billion potential labour hours in India in 2022 due to heat exposure, a significant increase from previous years.

The advisory aims to prevent such losses and ensure the well-being of workers during extreme heat conditions. It highlights the importance of creating safe working environments and providing necessary support to prevent heat-related illnesses and fatalities.

What is a heatwave advisory?

A heatwave advisory is a warning issued by meteorological agencies to inform the public about unusually hot weather conditions expected in a specific area. It alerts residents to take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke or dehydration. It may include recommendations to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities, and seek air-conditioned environments. Heatwave advisories help raise awareness and preparedness among the public to stay safe during extreme high temperatures. It is important to follow the guidelines provided to avoid health risks during heatwaves.

About Heatwaves in India

Heatwaves in India are most prevalent in the northern, central, and eastern regions of the country. States such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha are particularly prone to extreme heat conditions. The Indo-Gangetic Plain, a densely populated area, experiences severe heatwaves due to its landlocked geography and the influence of hot, dry winds from the Thar Desert. Coastal regions are generally less affected, but rising temperatures and humidity levels have led to increased heat stress in recent years.
