India Slams China’s Renaming Tactics

The government of India openly expressed strong criticism over China’s latest endeavours of renaming selected places in Arunachal Pradesh. India further reiterated that they were baseless attempts by the neighbouring country. From the Ministry of External Affairs, a statement was released about Arunachal Pradesh being an important integral part of democratic India. India refused to give into any sort of pressure from the Chinese nation.

India-China Border Dispute

Union Minister Karan Rijiju in a recent statement discussed India’s pro active initiatives in keeping Chinese movements under control. The border dispute stems down as a result of the inactive measures meted out by previous governments at the centre. The ministry further stated that renaming efforts by China are not going to halt the state’s infrastructure and developmental programs. Nearly 30 places in Arunachal Pradesh have recently been renamed by China, pushing India to showcase a resolute stance on the border dispute.

Historical and Legal Basis of India’s Territorial Claims

On the basis of China’s imperial hold in the past over certain regions of India, territorial claims have sprung every now and then in the region. On the other hand, successful Chinese governments in the past have also marked that India claims territorial ownership of its regions based on British imperialism of the past. Basically, historic possessions and lack of sufficient understanding have created long-standing rifts in the border issue.

The 1962 Indo-China war concerning territorial claims between the two nations remain elusive till date. Political escalations between the two nations have erupted periodically resulting in local clashes and conflicts. Neither of the two nations have expressed desire to compromise on their national interests, bringing to fore the border disputes and not showing any signs of co-operative reset.
