96th Academy Awards: Oscars 2024 Winners

The 96th Academy Awards, held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, celebrated the best in cinema for the year 2024. “Oppenheimer” emerged as the night’s biggest winner, taking home seven Oscars, including the coveted Best Picture award. Christopher Nolan’s biographical film about the inventor of the atomic bomb also earned the director his first Best Director Oscar.

Oppenheimer’s Winning Streak

“Oppenheimer” led the pack with 13 nominations and managed to convert seven of them into wins. The film’s success was a testament to its gripping storytelling, outstanding performances, and technical brilliance. In addition to Best Picture and Best Director, “Oppenheimer” also won Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Score.

Christopher Nolan has previously received critical acclaim for his work on “The Dark Knight” Batman trilogy, “Inception,” “Memento,” and other notable films. This marks the first time one of his films has won the Best Picture award.

Cillian Murphy’s Triumphant Run

Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer earned him the Best Actor award, continuing his winning streak from the 2024 Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Murphy’s nuanced and powerful performance captured the complex emotions and moral dilemmas faced by the scientist who helped create the most destructive weapon in human history.

Emma Stone’s Surprise Win

In a surprising turn of events, Emma Stone won the Best Actress award for her role in “Poor Things,” beating out strong contenders like Lily Gladstone, who made history as the first Native American to be nominated in this category for her role in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

Barbie’s Sole Win

“Barbie,” the other half of the “Barbenheimer” box office sensation, earned eight nominations but only managed to win one award for Best Original Song, “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell. On the other hand, “Poor Things” made a strong showing in the technical categories, winning Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design.

Other Notable Winners and Moments

The Best International Feature Film award went to “The Zone of Interest” from the United Kingdom, while “20 Days in Mariupol” won Best Documentary Feature. Robert Downey Jr., who played Lewis Strauss, Oppenheimer’s rival, won the Best Supporting Actor award for his outstanding performance.

“The Boy and the Heron” took home the Best Animated Feature award, and “War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko” won Best Animated Short Film.
