Adani Group unveils Domestic Ammunition and Missile Production facility

Indian conglomerate Adani Group unveiled the country’s first domestic ammunition and missile production facility through a joint venture with Israel’s Elbit Systems targeting self-sufficiency needs of the armed forces. Defense Corridor Immunization Manufacturing Complex of Adani Defense and Aerospace, spread over 500 acres, was inaugurated by Army Chief General Manoj Pande and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Strategic Highlights

The 50:50 partnership named Adani Elbit Advanced Systems includes an army munition plant in Uttar Pradesh. The unit will supply 155mm artillery shells besides other ammunitions to the Indian Army which remains overwhelmingly reliant on imports presently. 32 variants of ammunition have been identified for manufacture by Indian industry in first phase.

Boosting Self Reliance Credentials

The foray into the high-precision, technology-driven defence sector dominated by state owned incumbent Ordnance Factory Board and international players marks another milestone for Adani Group after strategic partnerships deals with global defence majors like SAAB and Airbus making headway.

Advanced Technology Deployment

Adani Elbit plant touts incorporating pioneering Industry 4.0 automation concepts like Internet of Things and robotics promising improved safety, optimum resource utilisation, real time quality assurance, waste reduction and supply chain orchestration capabilities.

Target Export Markets

Besides domestic requirements serving, the joint venture also eyes exports to friendly countries. Adani Group aspires cementing presence across entire defence production value chain encompassing aerospace, land systems, weapons and mission critical systems.

Securing Critical Needs Locally

With massive annual spending on imported ammunition and missiles straining foreign exchange alongside availability risks during crisis, domestic capability build up is imperative to achieve policy aim for meeting 25% defence procurement from local sources.

The high technology munitions facility reflects continued policy momentum and private sector appetite towards strategically enhancing self-reliance in defence manufacturing echoing wider ‘Make in India’ priorities.
