Notre Dame Stained Glass Controversy
The Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris suffered severe damage from a devastating fire in April 2019. As restoration plans progress, a controversy has erupted over a proposal backed by President Emmanuel Macron to replace some stained-glass windows with contemporary designs. Thousands of people have signed a petition opposing this plan.
Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture, receiving about 12 million visitors every year. After the fire two years ago, the focus has been on faithfully restoring this 800-year-old monument to its former glory.
President Macron’s Proposal
During a recent visit, President Macron suggested replacing stained glass windows in six out of seven chapels in the south aisle with modern interpretations. This idea originated from the Archbishop of Paris who wrote to the President requesting contemporary stained-glass window installations.
Macron gave his full approval, adding that the current windows by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc would be preserved in a new Notre Dame Museum exhibit. The identified windows were unharmed during the 2019 fire.
Opposition from Critics
This proposal has received intense criticism with over 122,000 people signing an online petition in just two weeks insisting the original stained-glass windows must stay untouched. Critics argue these were envisioned by Viollet-le-Duc to harmoniously fit with the overall Gothic architectural vision.
Altering them would undermine Notre Dame’s historic value and beauty. Instead, more appropriate locations could exist within the cathedral complex for contemporary stained glass that also commemorate the valiant firefighters.
Addressing Concerns
While introducing modern elements is reasonable, they shouldn’t override Viollet-le-Duc’s coherent design and vision. Stained glass experts highlight the remarkable craftsmanship of the current chapel windows needing protection.
However, new stained glass in the fire-ravaged north tower can pay respectful tribute to firefighters’ bravery and sacrifice, while giving visitors something additional to admire! Such solutions showcase how heritage and modernity can co-exist through compromise.
