Inaugural World Odia Language Conference

The Odisha government has announced plans to organize the first-ever ‘Biswa Odia Bhasha Sammilani’ (World Odia Language Conference) in February 2024. The Heritage Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, approved the proposal to strengthen and popularize the Odia language. National and international language experts, along with researchers, will be invited to the three-day event.

Conference Objectives

The conference aims to educate youth about the Odia language, addressing crucial issues such as integrating Odia into professional courses, the language’s role in the digital era, and providing insights for formulating relevant policies.

Participation of Students and NRIs

Students from across the state are expected to participate in the conference, with special programs planned in schools and colleges. The Odisha government has also extended invitations to non-resident Odias (NROs) living abroad, encouraging their participation in the conference. This inclusive approach seeks to engage a diverse audience in the celebration and promotion of the Odia language.

Strategic Timing Before Elections

Planned a few months ahead of the 2024 general and Assembly elections, the BJD-led state government’s initiative is viewed as an effort to boost the pride and prominence of the Odia language. Odia attained the status of a classical language in 2014, becoming the sixth Indian language and the first from the Indo-Aryan linguistic group to receive this recognition.

Legislative Measures to Promote Odia

To reinforce the significance of the Odia language, the Odisha government previously introduced the Odisha Official Language (Amendment) Bill in 2018. This legislation includes penal provisions for state government officials who do not use the Odia language in official communication, underlining the government’s commitment to linguistic preservation.

Heritage and Cultural Celebration

The conference represents a platform for celebrating the rich heritage and culture associated with the Odia language. By bringing together language enthusiasts, experts, and researchers, the event aims to create a vibrant dialogue and contribute to the continued growth and relevance of the Odia language in the contemporary world.
