Gelephu Special Administrative Region
Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck recently announced the Gelephu Smartcity Project, a mega “international city” near the Indian border. This project, officially named the Gelephu Special Administrative Region (SAR), spans 1,000 square kilometers and aims to be an economic corridor connecting South Asia with Southeast Asia via India’s northeastern states.
Project Overview
The Gelephu SAR is designed as a Special Administrative Region, governed by distinct laws to encourage foreign investment. Positioned in the Sarpang district in Bhutan’s south, it includes plans for an international airport at Gelephu, the country’s second such airport.
Economic Corridor and Connectivity
The project seeks to create an economic corridor that connects South Asia with Southeast Asia through India’s northeastern states. Bhutan envisions a land connection from Gelephu, traversing Assam and West Bengal, providing access to Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Singapore over time.
“Mindfulness City” Concept
Gelephu is projected to be developed as a “mindfulness city,” fostering conscious and sustainable businesses inspired by Bhutan’s Buddhist spiritual heritage and unique identity. The project aims to integrate economic growth with Bhutan’s cultural values.
Economic Benefits and Infrastructure Development
The Gelephu project is expected to attract quality international investments, leading to substantial benefits for Bhutan. The initiative necessitates key investments in public infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and airports, contributing to economic development and job creation.
Gateway to the World
Gelephu is strategically positioned as a “gateway connecting Bhutan to the world,” shaping the nation’s future. The project is seen as a landmark moment in history, emphasizing its significance in Bhutan’s economic and cultural landscape.
Primary Goals and Economic Opportunities
The primary goals of the Gelephu SAR initiative include attracting investments, boosting trade, and creating job opportunities. The project is expected to generate economic opportunities for the domestic and international workforce, fostering the growth of Bhutan’s private sector.
