National Geoscience Data Repository (NGDR) Portal Launch
The Ministry of Mines is set to unveil the National Geoscience Data Repository (NGDR) Portal on December 19, 2023, in a grand ceremony in New Delhi. This initiative aims to provide a comprehensive online platform for accessing, sharing, and analyzing geospatial information across the nation, marking a significant step in democratizing critical geoscience data.
Empowering Stakeholders Through NGDR
The NGDR initiative is a collaborative effort led by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and Bhaskaracharya Institute of Space Applications and Geoinformatics (BISAG-N). It promises to empower stakeholders across industries and academia by granting them unprecedented access to invaluable geospatial resources.
About Geological Survey of India (GSI)
Established in 1851 to discover coal deposits for the Railways, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has evolved into a repository of geo-science information with international repute. Its primary functions include creating and updating national geoscientific information, mineral resource assessment, ground surveys, air-borne and marine surveys, and geological expertise for policy decisions.
GSI’s focus extends to systematic documentation of all geological processes, both surface and subsurface, in India and its offshore areas. Using the latest techniques and methodologies, GSI enhances its core competence in survey and mapping through spatial databases and computer-based technologies for dissemination.
