Madhya Pradesh Road Connectivity and Resilience Project

The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have officially inked a $175 million loan agreement to enhance connectivity and resilience of roads in Madhya Pradesh. The project aims to improve road connectivity across 14 districts, promoting balanced economic development in the state.

Enhancing State Road Network

The Madhya Pradesh Road Network Project will focus on upgrading approximately 500 kilometers of state highways and major district roads to a standard two-lane feature. These roads will incorporate climate- and disaster-resilient design, innovative road safety elements, and facilities catering to diverse needs, including the elderly, women, children, and people with disabilities.

Capacity Building and Sustainability Measures

ADB will play a role in building the capacity of the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation Limited (MPRDC) on climate change adaptation, disaster resilience, and road safety. The project will also facilitate the adoption of green technology in road construction and establish charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.

Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Strategies

The project places a significant emphasis on gender equality and social inclusion. It aims to formulate a gender equality and social inclusion strategy for MPRDC, establish an internship program to attract female students to the road sector, and engage women self-help groups to promote road safety awareness.

Entrepreneurship Initiatives

In addition to infrastructure development, the project will conduct livelihood and entrepreneurship training programs for women and girls. It also includes the construction of at least two roadside markets, contributing to local economic development.

ADB Support

ADB has been actively supporting road development in Madhya Pradesh since 2002, having upgraded over 9,000 kilometers of state highways and major district roads. The Madhya Pradesh Road Network Project aligns with these efforts, aiming to establish roads that are safer, more resilient to climate impacts, and conducive to balanced economic growth.
