SBM-GOBARdhan Biogas Conference to be Organized on December 1

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) is set to host the SBM-GOBARdhan Biogas Conference: Accelerating Waste to Wealth & Circular Economy on December 1, 2023. This collaborative effort involves partnerships with GIZ, Circular Waste Solutions, and UNIDO, aiming to foster cross-sectoral linkages and facilitate knowledge exchange among stakeholders in the Compressed Biogas (CBG) sector.

GOBARdhan Initiative: Converting Waste to Wealth

At the heart of this initiative is Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan (GOBARdhan), an umbrella initiative by the Government of India. GOBARdhan focuses on converting waste to wealth, creating a robust ecosystem for Biogas, Compressed Biogas (CBG), and Bio-Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) plants. The ultimate goal is to drive sustainable economic growth and promote a circular economy.

India’s Ambition for Net-Zero Emissions

Aligned with India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, waste to biogas is poised to play a crucial role. The conference serves as a platform to discuss and accelerate this transition.

Budget 2023 Commitment: ‘Waste to Wealth’ Plants

As per Budget 2023, the Indian government plans to establish 500 new ‘waste to wealth’ plants under the GOBARdhan scheme, promoting a circular economy. This includes 200 compressed biogas plants, with 75 in urban areas, and 300 community or cluster-based plants, with a total investment of Rs 10,000 crore.

Operational Success Stories

Operational CBG plants in cities like Indore, Pune, Ambala, Chennai, Varanasi, Surat, Tirupati, Visakhapatnam, and Hyderabad are already making strides. Additionally, cities like Solapur, Goa, Nashik, Vijayawada, Hyderabad, and Bhopal boast Waste to Electricity plants.

Inauguration of ‘Waste to Energy’ Plant

Highlighting the momentum, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the ‘Waste to Energy’ plant in Moshi on August 1, 2023. This plant in Pimpri Chinchwad has a capacity to generate 14 MW electricity per day, utilizing 700 tons per day (TPD) of dry waste.

Conference Agenda: Addressing Crucial Topics

The conference agenda spans various crucial topics, including transformational policies for waste to CBG projects, national initiatives like SATAT and MDA, state-specific policies, and initiatives for CBG facilitation. Discussions will involve senior officials from MoPNG, MNRE, Ministry of Finance, expert consultants, development partners, Biogas Associations, and academic institutions.
