Experiments in rats suggest that extended periods in space, characterized by microgravity and exposure to cosmic radiation, could increase the risk of erectile dysfunction in male astronauts. The study, conducted at Florida State University, simulated microgravity using a hindlimb unloading technique and exposed rats to varying levels of cosmic radiation simulation. The results indicated higher levels of oxidative stress and narrowed blood vessels in the erectile tissue of rats exposed to radiation, suggesting potential risks to astronauts’ sexual health during and after space travel.
