‘Kasturi Cotton Bharat’ Initiative
India has taken a significant step to enhance the quality and traceability of its cotton by launching the official website of ‘Kasturi Cotton Bharat.’ The initiative, unveiled by Union Minister Piyush Goyal, aims to strengthen India’s competitiveness in the global cotton market and create a sustainable ecosystem for all stakeholders involved.
The Kasturi Cotton Bharat Initiative
Kasturi Cotton Bharat is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Textiles, the Cotton Corporation of India, trade bodies, and the textile industry. It operates on the principles of self-regulation, where stakeholders take responsibility for branding, traceability, and certification of Indian cotton. This approach seeks to position Indian cotton as a premium and trusted product in international markets.
Genesis of Kasturi Cotton Bharat
The birth of ‘Kasturi Cotton Bharat’ can be traced back to World Cotton Day, celebrated on October 7th. The Ministry of Textiles introduced the brand with a logo symbolizing qualities such as whiteness, softness, purity, lustre, and Indianness. Subsequently, an MoU was signed on December 15, 2022, between the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) and TEXPROCIL, representing the textile industry, formalizing a mission-driven strategy for promoting Kasturi Cotton Bharat.
Inclusivity and Traceability
One of the key features of this initiative is its inclusivity. Cotton ginners across India are empowered to produce the Kasturi Cotton Bharat brand by adhering to specified protocols. Advanced technology is employed to ensure complete traceability. QR-based certification technology is used at every processing stage, and a blockchain-based software platform provides end-to-end traceability and transaction certificates.
