Delhi Launches ‘Anti-Industrial Pollution’ Campaign

In a bid to address the issue of industrial pollution in the national capital, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced the launch of an ‘Anti-Industrial Pollution’ campaign. The campaign will run from October 20 to November 20.

Joint Initiative to Combat Pollution

A joint meeting was held between the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC), and the Environment Department to discuss measures to combat industrial pollution in Delhi.

Key Focus of the Campaign

The ‘Anti-Industrial Pollution’ campaign will have a dual focus:

  1. Surveillance of Industrial Units: The campaign will closely monitor industrial units in Delhi to assess and control pollution levels.
  2. Curbing Garbage Burning: Authorities will keep a check on the practice of dumping garbage in empty plots and burning it in industrial areas, as this contributes to air pollution.

Task Force Deployment

To implement the campaign effectively, 66 teams have been deployed to monitor these two key aspects for a month, starting from October 20 to November 20.

Importance of Joint EffortsThe Delhi government acknowledges that 31% of pollution in the city stems from internal sources, while 69% originates from external sources, particularly from the NCR states. The minister highlights that while Delhi is taking various measures to reduce pollution through its Winter Action Plan, addressing pollution sources in NCR states is crucial for effective results.

Points for Discussion in Joint Meeting

The letter to the Union Environment Minister outlines key points for discussion, including:

  1. Stopping Stubble Burning: Measures to prevent stubble burning in NCR states.
  2. Cleaner Brick Kilns: Converting heavily polluting brick kilns in NCR states to use zig-zag technology.
  3. Cleaner Fuels: Urging industrial units in NCR states to switch from polluting fuels to piped natural gas.
  4. Clean Transport: Encouraging the use of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) or electric vehicles for public transport coming from NCR to Delhi.
  5. Firecracker Ban: Discussing the possibility of a complete ban on firecrackers in NCR states.
