Intensified Mission Indradhanush 5.0 Campaign

Intensified Mission Indradhanush (IMI 5.0) is the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s primary immunization initiative. This program targets children and pregnant women who haven’t been immunized, ensuring they receive their required vaccinations.

Expansion of Coverage

For the first time, IMI 5.0 has been extended to every district in the country. Furthermore, it now includes children up to the age of 5, whereas past campaigns only covered those up to 2 years old.

Campaign Goals

The objective of IMI 5.0 is to increase coverage of all vaccines listed under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) following the National Immunization Schedule (NIS). A significant emphasis has been placed on improving Measles and Rubella vaccination rates, aiming for their eradication by 2023. Additionally, the U-WIN digital platform is being tested across all districts for routine immunization.

Schedule and Rounds

The campaign is organized into three rounds, each lasting six days, with an additional Routine Immunization Day:

  • 7-12 August
  • 11-16 September
  • 9-14 October

All states and union territories, except for Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Punjab, are set to complete the campaign by 14th October 2023. These four states faced delays and will finalize their campaign in November 2023.

Progress Report

As of 30th September 2023, over 34.69 lakh children and about 6.55 lakh pregnant women received vaccinations during the first two rounds of IMI 5.0.

On-the-Ground Efforts

  • Officials from DHS FW, SIO Assam inspected sites in Darrang district, Assam.
  • Monitoring took place in Sikkim to assess the immunization status at relief camps.
  • Vaccination sessions were held in Manipur and Himachal Pradesh.

Preparation and Training

A preparedness assessment for IMI 5.0 occurred between 19th and 23rd July 2023 in 154 high-priority districts across 27 states/union territories. On 23rd June 2023, a national workshop was conducted in the capital to brief all states/UTs about the campaign. Moreover, operational guidelines and a comprehensive communication strategy were shared with all states/UTs.

Public Engagement

The campaign’s communication strategy adopted a 360-degree approach, encompassing advocacy, tackling vaccine hesitancy, and involving local influencers. To spread the word, a variety of informational materials were provided for translation into local languages. Notably, many social media influencers and Jan pratinidhis actively encouraged the public to partake in the campaign.

Historical Impact

Since 2014, 11 phases of Mission Indradhanush have been rolled out nationwide. As of now, during the ongoing 12th phase, over 5.06 crore children and 1.25 crore pregnant women have been vaccinated under the initiative.
