What is UMMEED?

The Union Ministry of Education (MoE) has unveiled draft guidelines to address the critical issue of student suicides in schools. Named UMMEED (Understand, Motivate, Manage, Empathise, Empower, Develop), these guidelines provide a comprehensive plan of action to enhance awareness, sensitivity, and support mechanisms for students facing mental health challenges.

Formation of School Wellness Teams (SWT)

  • The guidelines propose the establishment of School Wellness Teams led by the school principal.
  • SWT members are expected to undergo training in handling crisis situations.
  • When a student displays warning signs or self-harm tendencies, any stakeholder should promptly report it to the SWT, which must take immediate action.

Teacher and Family Orientation

  • The guidelines emphasize the importance of conducting yearly orientations for teachers and family members.
  • These orientations aim to raise awareness about student suicide prevention and capacity-building for stakeholders.
  • Schools are responsible for organizing these sessions.

Immediate Response Protocol

  • In the event of a student displaying warning signs or attempting self-harm, the guidelines outline a series of actions to be taken by school individuals or members of the wellness team.
  • These actions are designed to ensure timely and appropriate responses to such cases.
