Diabetes Global Industry Overview 2023

A new report titled “Diabetes Global Industry Overview 2023” sheds light on the staggering impact of diabetes on global health and healthcare expenditure. With nearly seven million deaths attributed to diabetes in 2021 and healthcare costs reaching $970 billion that year, diabetes poses a significant challenge to healthcare systems worldwide. This report delves into the prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of diabetes on a global scale.

Diabetes Epidemic

As of now, 537 million adults worldwide are living with diabetes, with three-quarters residing in low- and middle-income countries. Additionally, over 540 million adults have impaired glucose tolerance, a precursor to diabetes. Alarmingly, around 40% of diabetes cases globally remain undiagnosed, with higher rates in Africa (60%), South-East Asia (57%), and the Western Pacific Region (56%).

Challenges in Diabetes Diagnosis

Diabetes often goes undetected for years unless diagnosed during routine screening exams and blood tests. The World Health Organization’s diagnostic criteria for diabetes include evaluating two-hour glucose levels and fasting glucose levels. Early detection is crucial for effective management and prevention of complications.

Global Diabetes Treatment Centers

The report identifies over 1,840 medical centers specializing in diabetes treatment, with the United States leading the market, hosting 1,466 of these centers, comprising approximately 78% of the global total. Following the US, countries with the highest numbers of diabetes treatment centers include India (58), Canada (51), the UK (42), Japan (29), and Australia (24).

Diverse Services for Diabetic Patients

These centers offer a wide range of services for diabetic patients, including treatment, prevention, screening, health management, residential and home care, and rehabilitation. Approximately 45% of these centers specialize exclusively in diabetes treatment, while 20% focus on treating diabetes-related complications, and the remaining 36% have no specific specialization.

Growth and Saturation in the Diabetes Diagnostics Market

The report also highlights the diabetes diagnostics market, with over 1,800 medical centers and clinics specializing in diabetes diagnostics. The number of clinics in this segment has more than doubled from 567 in 1999 to 1,329 in 2022. However, market saturation became evident in 2019. The period between 2000 and 2007 witnessed significant growth in diabetes diagnostics, with an average of 38 new clinics per year. Subsequently, the market entered a phase of stability from 2008 to 2016 before experiencing a decline from 2017 onward, marked by reduced investments and fewe new companies entering the market.

Global Distribution of Diabetes Diagnostic Companies

Of the over 530 companies specializing in diabetes diagnostics, more than 65% are based in the United States (349 companies). The remaining 35% are distributed relatively evenly among other countries, with the United Kingdom (21), India (17), China (11), and Australia (11) comprising less than 15% of the total.
