Draft Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (Ninth Amendment) Regulations, 2023 was released recently by TRAI. It proposes safeguards against SIM-swap frauds.

A History of Regulatory Evolution

Since the issuance of the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability Regulations, 2009 (8 of 2009), a total of eight amendments have been introduced to refine and enhance the MNP framework. These changes have aimed to streamline the process and improve the overall experience for mobile users.

In recent times, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has actively engaged with TRAI, providing valuable suggestions and insights regarding the regulatory framework for Mobile Number Portability. These suggestions reflect the ever-evolving nature of the telecommunications industry and the need for responsive regulations.

Drafting Amendments for Stakeholder Input

Taking into account the valuable input from the DoT, TRAI has decided to take a proactive step by issuing draft amendment regulations. These proposed amendments, titled the “Draft Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (Ninth amendment) Regulations, 2023,” have been made available on TRAI’s official website.
