TRAI Releases Recommendations on Low Power Small Range FM Radio Broadcasting
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has responded to a request from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) by issuing recommendations on “Issues related to Low Power Small Range FM Radio Broadcasting.” This move opens up exciting possibilities for various applications, including drive-in theaters, hospital radio services, amusement parks, and local event commentary.
New Service Provider Category
Following an extensive consultation process, TRAI has unveiled its recommendations, introducing a novel service provider category for “Low Power Small Range FM Radio Broadcasting.” These recommendations also lay out essential details such as eligibility criteria, permission periods, fees, and technical specifications. The goal is to streamline the provision of low-power FM radio services for specific locations and reception areas.
Eligibility Criteria
Entities eligible to hold a license or registration for Low Power Small Range FM Broadcasting encompass individuals over eighteen years of age, companies registered under the Companies Act 2013 (including LLP and partnership firms), with exceptions such as political parties, religious bodies, and individuals convicted by a court of any offense.
Permission Periods and Fees
Permissions can range from thirty days to five years. While no application or entry fee is imposed, a fee of Rs. 1000/- is applicable for permissions lasting up to thirty days, and Rs. 10,000/- per annum for a five-year permission.
Frequency Assignment
Frequency assignment is facilitated by the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) through an online portal within two days of application submission. The maximum allowable transmission range is 500 meters.
Transmission Technologies
License, registration, or authorization holders are free to employ any transmission technologies, whether analog, digital, or other.
Licensed Area
The licensed area for frequency assignment is determined based on precise geographical coordinates such as longitude and latitude, ensuring suitability for various locations like buildings, stadiums, convention centers, expo areas, and more.
