Dedicated Coal Corridors Needed to Meet India’s Growing Power Demand, Says Railway Board Study
A recent study by the Railway Board underscores the importance of dedicated coal corridors to meet the rising power demand in India. As coal plays a vital role in powering the nation, particularly flowing from states like Odisha, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh to various regions, the report suggests the creation of exclusive coal transportation tracks along Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC).
The Growing Energy Demand
India’s energy requirements are expected to soar in the coming years. The study estimates that by 2030, the country will need approximately 3000 billion units (BU) of energy annually. This translates to a per capita energy consumption of roughly 2000 units per year. As India continues to grow and modernize, the demand for power is on the rise.
Rising Coal Consumption
Coal remains a primary source of energy in India, fueling various industries and power plants. The study forecasts a substantial increase in coal consumption, reaching 1853 million tons (mt) by 2030. This projection exceeds earlier estimates of 1547 mt outlined in the National Rail Plan (NRP). To meet this escalating demand, efficient coal transportation systems are essential.
The Call for Dedicated Coal Corridors
To ensure a smooth supply of coal across the nation, the report emphasizes the need to prioritize the development of coal corridors. Specifically, it highlights the importance of these corridors in the East-Coast DFC routes and the eastern segment of the East-West DFC corridors. These corridors will facilitate the transportation of coal from Talacher to eastern coastline ports, streamlining the distribution process.
