Rajouri Chikri Woodcraft and Mushqbudji Rice Receive GI Tags
In a celebratory move, Jammu and Kashmir’s distinct regional contributions, the Rajouri Chikri woodcraft and the Mushqbudji rice, have recently been honored with the Geographical Indication (GI) tags. This prestigious distinction draws attention to the exquisite nature and significance of these regional treasures.
Origins of Excellence
These esteemed creations find their roots in the districts of Rajouri and Anantnag. While the Rajouri district is renowned for its meticulous Chikri woodcraft, Anantnag stands out for its aromatic Mushqbudji rice, characterized by its short, bold grains.
Collaborative Efforts
The journey to this recognition began in December 2020. In a combined initiative, NABARD, the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom, along with the Department of Agriculture, embarked on the mission to earn these regional gems their rightful place on the global map.
Diverse Features of the Creations
Delving deeper into these marvels, the Mushqbudji rice is not just a culinary delight but a testament to the region’s agronomic brilliance. The expansion of its cultivation into districts like Budgam and Kulgam stands testimony to its increasing significance. Parallelly, the Chikri wood, known for its fine grains, finds its home amidst the picturesque hill ranges of the Jammu province, echoing the region’s rich artisanal heritage.
The Significance of GI Tags
More than a badge of authenticity, a Geographical Indication tag serves as an intellectual property right. This not only ensures the protection of the regional specialties but also underscores their unparalleled nature, deeply rooted in the very soil and culture they emanate from.
Looking Ahead
The success story doesn’t end here. With an unwavering commitment to preserving and promoting Jammu and Kashmir’s cultural heritage, the Jammu and Kashmir Agriculture Production Department is actively championing for an additional 24 crops and products to be graced with the esteemed GI tags. As the narrative unfolds, it promises a vibrant tapestry of legacies, traditions, and unmatched regional brilliance.
