On July 26, the National Conference on ‘Moving Mental Health Beyond Institutions’ commenced with the objective of addressing the challenges in the implementation of the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017.

Inauguration and Objectives

On July 26, the National Conference on ‘Moving Mental Health Beyond Institutions’ commenced, aiming to primarily address the implementation challenges encountered during the execution of the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017. The conference is designed to have four thematic sessions covering various aspects of mental health, including infrastructural and human resource challenges in mental health establishments, rights of persons with mental illness, and the latest trends in critical care of mental health with an international perspective.

National Tele-Mental Health Service

The National Tele-Mental Health service has been instrumental in enhancing mental healthcare accessibility. To date, 42 Tele-Manas cells have been established, recording over 2 lakh calls. This service has proven crucial, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, recognizing the impact of the health crisis on people’s psychological and emotional well-being.

Magnitude of Mental Health Issues in India

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 7.5% of the Indian population, which translates to over 90 million individuals, is affected by mental health issues. The National Mental Health Survey 2015-16 further revealed that an estimated 150 million people across India require mental health care interventions. The Indian government’s National Health Mission approximates that six to seven percent of the population suffers from mental disorders.

Government Initiatives for Mental Health

Recognizing the significance of mental health, the Indian government has taken several initiatives to address mental health challenges. The ‘National Tele Mental Health’ program was announced in the Budget for the year 2022-23. Additionally, the government set up a 24/7 helpline to provide psycho-social support by mental health professionals to various target groups, including children, adults, the elderly, women, and healthcare workers. Guidelines and advisories on managing mental health issues were also issued, catering to different segments of society.
