Sea Trial of INS Vaghsheer
The Indian Navy’s Project-75, aimed at enhancing its submarine fleet, has reached a significant milestone with the commencement of sea trials for the sixth Scorpene Submarine. Named Vaghsheer, this submarine sets the stage for further strengthening the country’s naval capabilities.
Sea Trials Begin
Vaghsheer, the sixth submarine of the Kalvari class under Project-75, initiated its sea trials on May 18. This crucial step brings the submarine closer to its delivery to the Indian Navy, scheduled for early 2024. The sea trials are a comprehensive assessment of the submarine’s systems, including propulsion, weapons, and sensors, ensuring their functionality and effectiveness.
Launch and Milestones
Vaghsheer set sail for the first time on April 20, 2022, at the Kanhoji Angre Wet Basin of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). MDL has been playing a significant role in the nation’s submarine-building program, and the launch of Vaghsheer marks another successful achievement for them. In the past 24 months, MDL has delivered three submarines under Project-75, showcasing their commitment to India’s vision of becoming self-reliant.
The Sand Fish and Stealth Features
Interestingly, INS Vaghsheer derives its name from the Sand Fish, a deadly predator inhabiting the depths of the Indian Ocean. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the Scorpene Submarine boasts exceptional stealth features. Advanced acoustic absorption techniques, low radiated noise levels, a hydro-dynamically optimized shape, and the ability to launch precision-guided weapons grant the submarine unparalleled invulnerability.
Designed for Operational Excellence
This submarine is a platform designed to operate in various theaters of operation. It showcases interoperability with other components of a Naval Task Force and represents a transformative shift in submarine operations. This emphasizes the submarine’s role in bolstering India’s maritime strength and strategic capabilities.
A Promising Future
As Vaghsheer undergoes rigorous sea trials, it paves the way for the Indian Navy to possess a formidable submarine fleet. With its impending delivery, the submarine will contribute significantly to India’s maritime security and strengthen its defense capabilities. The Scorpene Submarine program not only reflects the nation’s commitment to self-sufficiency but also demonstrates the exceptional capabilities of Indian shipbuilders.
