What is GRX-810?

NASA researchers have developed a new high-strength, high-temperature-resistant alloy called GRX-810 that could revolutionize the aerospace industry.

Development of GRX-810

GRX-810 is a nickel-cobalt-chromium-based alloy developed by materials scientists at NASA’s Glenn Research Center. The alloy was developed using a model-driven alloy design approach and laser-based additive manufacturing. With the laser 3D printing process, metals were fused together to create a new allow.

Properties of GRX-810

GRX-810 has a twofold improvement in strength compared to current state-of-the-art 3D printed superalloys. Additionally, it has over 1,000-fold better creep performance than traditional polycrystalline wrought Ni-based alloys. The temperature resistance of current state-of-the-art 3D printed superalloys is up to 1,093 degrees Celsius, but GRX-810 is over 1,000 times more durable than these alloys. GRX-810 has a twofold improvement in oxidation resistance compared to traditional polycrystalline wrought Ni-based alloys.

Potential Applications of GRX-810

The GRX-810 will help increase the strength and toughness of components and parts used in aviation and space exploration. It could be used to build aerospace parts for high-temperature applications, like those inside aircraft and rocket engines. The benefits of utilizing oxide dispersion strengthened alloys in aerospace applications lie in their ability to endure more severe circumstances prior to reaching their failure limits.
