National Maritime Day – Update (April, 2023)

National Maritime Day is celebrated every year in India on April 5th. This year marks the 60th edition of the day. The purpose of this day is to spread awareness about international trade and the economy. It is a day to honour and recognise the efforts of those who work in the Indian maritime sector. In this article, we will delve deeper into the history, celebrations and significance of National Maritime Day in India.

History of National Maritime Day

The inaugural edition of the National Maritime Day was celebrated on April 5, 1964. It was an opportunity to inform and educate people about intercontinental commerce and the economy worldwide. The day is observed to commemorate the maiden voyage of SS Loyalty, the first ship of The Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd, to the United Kingdom. This event was a significant moment in India’s shipping history as sea routes were previously controlled by the British.

Celebrations and Awards

On the occasion of the National Maritime Day, the NMD Award of Excellence is conferred to recognize individuals for their lifetime distinguished and exceptional achievements in the Indian maritime sector at a senior level. The Varuna Award, which consists of a statue of Lord Varuna and a citation, is also presented to those who have made an outstanding contribution to the Indian maritime sector. Additionally, the Outstanding Contribution to Maritime Education and Training award is also bestowed to honour distinguished individuals for their sustained contribution to Maritime Education and Training.

Themes of National Maritime Day

Each year, National Maritime Day is celebrated on a different theme. This year’s theme is ‘Amrit Kaal in Shipping’, which focuses on giving thanks to the men who spend countless months at sea, conducting the majority of India’s trade and commerce on a global scale. In 2019, the theme was “Indian Ocean-An Ocean of opportunity,” which highlighted the importance of the Indian Ocean for the global economy.

Importance of Protecting Our Marine Zone

National Maritime Day highlights the necessity of protecting, safeguarding, and defending our marine zone. Maritime shipping is the most efficient, secure, and ecologically responsible method of moving commodities around the globe. Therefore, protecting our marine zone is not only important for India’s economy but also for the international economy.

International Maritime Organisation

The United Kingdom has nominated the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for maritime protection and to prevent pollution from ships. India became an associate of this agency in 1959. The IMO convenes maritime conferences and drafts worldwide maritime conventions on a standard basis. The organization plays an essential role in ensuring the safety and security of shipping and preventing pollution from ships.
