International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action

April 4th is marked as the International Day of Mine Awareness and Aid in Mine Action. The Role of UNMAS

The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) leads the mine action community. UNMAS has been focusing on the needs of victims of explosive risks for the last two decades. UNMAS works in close collaboration with the United Nations Inter-Agency Coordination Group on Mine Action (IACG-MA), which is comprised of 12 departments, agencies, funds, and programs that ensure system-wide coherence in all mine action pillars and activities.

Campaign Theme for 2023

The theme of International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action 2023 is “Mine Action Cannot Wait.” The campaign will focus on Cambodia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, and Vietnam, where the impact of explosive hazards remains severe.

The UN supports the universalization of current legal frameworks to protect people from the scourges of landmines and explosive relics of war. Protocol V of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons came into effect on November 12, 2006. Additionally, the signing of the Convention on Cluster Munitions aimed to ban the use, production, stockpiling, and transfer of cluster munitions.

Efforts of UNMAS

The UNMAS’s efforts are aimed at saving lives, facilitating the deployment of UN missions, delivering humanitarian aid, encouraging the voluntary return of internally displaced people and refugees, facilitating humanitarian and recovery activities, and advocating for international humanitarian and human rights law. UNMAS works with national authorities, non-governmental organizations, and other partners to ensure an effective response to the threats of explosive hazards.
