INS Sumedha participated in IDEX and NAVDEX
INS Sumedha participated in the Naval Defence Exhibition called the NAVDEX and International Defence Exhibition called the IDEX conducted in Abu Dhabi recently. The Naval Ship showcased the indigenous ship-building skills of India at the exhibitions.
INS Sumedha
She is a SARAYU class NOPV. NOPV means Naval Offshore Patrol Vessels. The first INS SUMEDHA was built in Goa and joined the Navy in 2011. The one that participated in the exhibition was recently commissioned, in 2014. It was the third indigenously built INS SUMEDHA. She can carry helicopters.
IDEX
The first IDEX was held in 1993. The exhibition is biennial and focuses mainly on defence technologies rather than defence products. The exhibition is held in Abu Dhabi, UAE and is one of the largest defence exhibitions in the middle east.
How big is the IDEX?
More than 4 to 5 billion USD of business happens during the exhibition. In the recent AERO INDIA 2023 defence exhibition, the total business was around 90,000 USD.
Significance
India is trying to increase its defence exports. By 2025, India aims to achieve Rs 35,000 crores of defence exports. To reach the target, India is increasing its investment in the defence sector. In the 2023-24 budget, the defence sector received the highest fund allocation.
