Govt Plans OTT Platform and Direct to Mobile TV

The Government of India has been making several changes in the broadcasting sector. The intention is to increase its imprint among the public and gain their trust. For instance, the broadcasting infrastructure and network development scheme was launched to support Prasar Bharati. Now, the GoI is planning on launching an OTT platform and a Direct to Mobile TV.

What is the plan?

The plan is to auction the FM radio stations and then broadcast them on OTT platforms. GoI is planning to conduct trials for DTM broadcast. Initially, this will be implemented in Tier II and Tier III cities.

Need for the plan

There are many FM radio stations. However, they cover only 60% of the country. The objective is to reach remote areas, tribals, and mainly the border areas.

Benefits

With this, the government can reach the people quickly and with ease. As the FM stations will be broadcasted to mobiles of the citizens directly, the reach is fast. There are more than one billion smartphone users in the country. Also, smartphone prices have declined big.

The concept is simple. To bring FM radio on mobile; broadcast government-related information and news. However, the only challenge here will be the allocation of the spectrum.
